Overall Aim

Our Lagan Corridor Vision seeks to:

"ensure the sensitive and optimum planning and development of the Lagan Corridor, by utilising the river and its adjacent lands, in a sensitive, practical and co-ordinated approach through the first two decades of the 21st century".

Objectives

  1. To turn this vision into reality, 12 key objectives have been established. Their achievement will involve the participation of a wide group of key agencies, local organisations and citizens.
  2. To help facilitate development by providing guidelines and working in partnership with landowners and developers.
  3. To help create sustainable employment opportunities across a variety of activities.
  4. To sustain and enhance the City centre by encouraging residential, retail, commercial and recreational use within an improved urban environment.
  5. To consolidate existing villages and localities and support local community action plans.
  6. To promote the creation of new villages and communities.
  7. To protect and enhance the Corridor's environment and heritage by influencing development and by ensuring that proper management arrangements exist.
  8. To encourage development that enhances the River Corridor through good design with a positive impact on the environment.
  9. To establish the river as a thoroughfare by improving access and circulation.
  10. To establish closer physical links between the City, villages and the river by removing physical and psychological boundaries and barriers.
  11. To encourage and promote recreational activities within the Corridor, by providing the necessary open space and infrastructure and by promotion and organisation of events.
  12. To progressively re-open the Lagan for navigation through the entire length of the corridor.
  13. To promote integrated transport by facilitating public transport , pedestrian friendly areas, cycling and other similar initiatives.
