Bridge Street The regeneration of the Historic Quarter has seen significant progress in the restoration of Bridge Street during the year with a number of building renovations completed.
Developments in this area include the development of a number of new turn-key apartments in the Historic Quarter for city living. Castle Gardens Restoration Scheme In 2000 the Council's Historic Quarter initiative embarked on one of the largest heritage projects undertaken in Northern Ireland; the restoration of Lisburn City's Castle Gardens. Preliminary work to restore Castle Gardens, one of the City's most historical landmarks, to its former glory has begun
The £4.7 million regeneration project which reached completion in May 2008, following major refurbishment and restoration work, has transformed Castle Gardens into a major attraction for residents and visitors.
The project is one of the largest urban park projects in the UK to be funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. New facilities include an education centre (former air raid shelter), a purpose-built children's play area, newly planted flower beds, better lighting, re-surfaced paths, toilets and improved security for the Gardens as well as reinstatement of the old walls around the Garden. An Education Programme will raise awareness, establish links with local schools and community groups and promote the heritage and history of the Gardens.
