The Mayor's Charity, The Carers Forum on Learning Disability, was set up to provide a voice for people with a range of learning disabilities and their families/carers and to represent their needs and dreams, however they define them. The Forum works to raise awareness and influence policy and decision makers in the pursuit of its vision of an inclusive society meeting the needs of people with a learning disability and their families/carers.
In June 2009 the Forum was awarded the 'Queen's Award for Voluntary Services' in recognition of its effective working partnership with the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust. Through its Committee, it encourages and fosters personal and group effectiveness through the provision of timely support, appropriate training and development opportunities.
The Carers Forum on Learning Disability aims to be open and transparent in all their dealings with everyone, always putting the person with a learning disability at the heart of everything. It will work to ensure, that having a learning disability in our society is viewed as a valued life experience.
The Mayor has worked alongside Carers Forum members for many years and played a significant role in the provision of a new building for the Lisburn Assessment & Resource Centre, which provides state of the art day care opportunities for 120 Lisburn learning disabled clients.
Alderman Porter will endeavour to raise awareness about the Carers Forum on Learning Disability and his office will undertake a number of fundraising activities during the coming year raising much needed funds for this special charity.
The Mayor's Office is very interested to hear about initiatives from the local community that will help to raise funds for this worthy cause. Please contact the Mayor's Office on 028 9250 9331.
