The IFA Grassroots Programme Lisburn offers boys and girls from the ages of 6-14 the opportunity to take part in both “Skills and Games” development throughout the year. Based at our grassroots centre at Laurelhill on Tuesday & Wednesday evenings we run a “skills” based activity where we use “Coerver” coaching to encourage all the participants no matter what level or experience they have. This is an activity which focuses on player development delivered by experienced IFAqualified coaches in a fun filled atmosphere. Sessions run for 10 weeks throughout the year.

One of the most exciting developments in the past year has been the "Games Development" programme, which ran on Saturday mornings at the Village Centre Hillsborough. These sessions have concluded for this term but will be starting again in September. Official dates for this will be posted on the website but anyone wishing to obtain further information can do so by contacting Ken Duncan, IFA GDO on 07802 327553.

The value of this programme is to provide youngsters (6-12 ) with an opportunity to showcase their newly acquired skills and creativity. The aim is to provide training and game environments that promote the continued improvement of ball skills, an increased awarness and an appreciation for taking calculated risks in the attack through small-sided games.

Grassroots Football GroupThe small-sided game model is an effective method for developing ball skills and game awarness because it increases opportunities for players to have contact with the ball and to attack and defend without the tactical regimentation that can occur in 11 v 11 football.

Competition is a central element in a player's development. However a competitive environment should not be a result-oriented environment. A competitive environment at this level should encourage decisions from players and coach alike that focus on performance rather than outcome ( favouring ball skills and inventiveness).

This programme is a national based one and forms part of the IFA Grassroots Grassroots Football Development programme. The Grassroots Development Officer Ken Duncan who is based with Lisburn City Council would encourage all local clubs to engage in this programme as it provides a great basis for all players no matter what their ability to learn and develop without undue pressure.

Both of these activities are IFA licensed programmes.

For more information and application forms please contact the IFA Grassroots Development Officer at Lisburn City Council Leisure Services Dept on 028 9250 9554 or 07802 327553.
