SPORTS DEVELOPMENTLisburn City Council's Sports Development Section is responsible for the provision and promotion of a wide variety of sporting opportunities across the City. The Youth Sport Lisburn Initiative, part-funded by the Council, has provided over twelve thousand coaching opportunities across the City. The Sports Development Section also helped facilitate numerous training opportunities for sports clubs in a wide variety of areas including child protection, first-aid, club administration and coaching development.
2002 also saw the Official Opening of the Laurelhill Sports Zone. This floodlight, synthetic, all-weather pitch was the result of a successful partnership between the Council, Laurelhill Community College and the South Eastern and Education Library Board. The College controls the dual use facility during the day and by the Council's Sports Development Section during the evening, Saturdays and school holidays. Plans are also underway for the Sports Zone to build upon its initial success to encompass a summer scheme location and to achieve accreditation as a mini soccer centre. The provision of Summer Schemes throughout the City also falls within the remit of the Sports Development Section. Last year the Council provided Summer activities for young people at 12 venues across the City. Sports, trips, arts and craft projects, led by qualified leaders were delivered to all participants. The Sports Development Section also takes an active role in many of the internationally recognised sporting events across the City. The section is directly responsible for the Lisburn City Half Marathon, 10K Road Race and Fun Run. Such is the popularity of the event the 10K Road Race is now part of the Northern Ireland Road Racing Championships.
