WASTE STRATEGIES
The challenge of managing the City's waste has become significantly more complex in recent years and the scale and pace of the changes required to meet European directives show no sign of abating.
With landfill capacity severely restricted and recycling targets set at 25% of household waste by 2005, rising to 40% by 2010, major alterations have been made to the way the City and its residents manage their waste.
arc 21
Lisburn City Council, together with 10 other councils from the Eastern Region of Northern Ireland, continue to work within a partnership known as arc 21 to address these important issues.
In June 2002 the draft Waste Management Plan published by arc 21 was submitted to the Department of the Environment and was formally approved. A review of the plan including a public consultation took place in 2006 with the reviewed plan submitted to the Department of the Environment on 30th June 2006.
