GUIDANCE FOR FOOD BUSINESSES

If you currently operate or are planning to start up a food business in the Lisburn City Council area, you must comply with the following:

  1. Registration: You need to complete and return a Food Registration Form to the Environmental Health Department of the council.
  2. Structure: The structure and layout of the food premises needs to comply with the requirements of Regulation (EC) No 852/2004. Please click here to download a guide to these requirements.
  3. Training: Food handlers need to be supervised, instructed, and/or trained in food hygiene matters to a level appropriate to their work activity.  Lisburn City Council have a list of local Food Hygiene Training Providers.
  4. HACCP(Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points): From 1 January 2006 new legal requirements mean all food business operators must identify food safety hazards and risks relevant to their business, and put in place procedures to prevent problems. They are also required to provide simple written evidence of the arrangements for making sure the food produced and sold to customers is safe.  Further details on haccp including the Safe Catering - Your Guide to Haccp can be found on: www.foodstandards.gov.uk/northernireland/safetyhygieneni/safecateringni A pack has also been produced for retailers - Safer Food Better Business. In addition, packs are now also available for Chinese and Asian cuisines. If you would like a pack or require further guidance, please contact the Food Team.
  5. Labelling: You will need to consider labelling requirements if you sell food either loose or prepacked. Further guidance is available on the Food Standards page of the website.

After a planned inspection of your food business, the premises is scored to identify the frequency of inspections. The premises is then assigned a risk rating. This rating remains until the next planned inspection, when a further score is given. Please click for further information on the Risk Rating of Premises.

In addition, your premises will be assigned a Scores on the Doors Star Rating. Further details of this scheme can be found on the Scores on the Doors page of the website.
