COOK IT INIATITIVE

‘Cook it!’ is a community based nutrition education programme targeted at lower income groups facilitated regionally by the Health Promotion Agency. It aims to provide practical experience of food preparation, with an opportunity to sample the completed dishes, thereby removing the financial risk involved in experimenting with new dishes within restricted resources.

The ‘Cook it!’ coordinators may come from a variety of different backgrounds including NHS staff for example health visitors, Sure Start employees, community development workers, community group workers and volunteers.

Lisburn City Council’s Environmental Health Service regularly attend ‘Cook it!’ interventions providing information and advice to community workers in the form of leaflets ranging from food safety to nutrition and home safety.  Also a power point presentation is shown in relation to the A – Z of Food Safety and this is made available to community workers for use when out in the community educating target groups.

Continually this event proves very successful with great interest shown by all who attend.
