INTERNATIONAL TRADE DEVELOPMENT

The Economic Development Unit has established many important links with businesses, locally, nationally and internationally.

As part of a European Outlook Initiative, a trade visit to the Netherlands took place in Summer 2002.  Six local companies took part in a four-day itinerary with selected Dutch companies.  This trade visit has resulted in £40,000 of new sales to date with a further £200,000 expected in 2003.

A visit by the Greater Seattle Trade Delegation is expected to net significant investment in the City.  The Delegation had the opportunity to visit local businesses, strengthen links and meet key decision makers.  Local companies are already seeing the benefits and to-date have successfully secured a number of international contracts.

The Mayor of Lisburn City Council, Councillor Billy Bell and Councillor Bill Gardiner-Watson roll out the barrels at Hilden Brewery to welcome Bill Stafford, President of the Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle.

The Council has also helped local companies gain access to the South African market.  The Council has been working with thirteen local companies exploring potential new trade agreements.  Two trade visits to South Africa took place during the year with a South African Ministerial delegation returning to Lisburn in July 2003.

Lisburn City Council is getting the message out that the City of Lisburn is home to world-class businesses with the ability to compete successfully in global markets.  The success of the Council's international trade programmes can directly be attributed to the excellent local business product.
