REGISTERING A STILL BIRTH

A still-birth that occurred in Northern Ireland may be registered in any district in Northern Ireland.

A stillbirth should be registered as soon as possible to allow funeral arrangements to proceed, but no later than five days from the date of occurrence, except where the matter has been referred to the Coroner.

The person registering the stillbirth must go the Registration Office as soon as possible with a medical certificate of cause of stillbirth. This is usually issued to the relatives by a doctor.

A mother or father of the still-born child can register. The grandmother, grandfather, uncle or aunt of the stillborn child. If the parents are not married to each other and the mother or father cannot attend to register the still-birth only an informant on the maternal side may carry out the registration.

To register the stillbirth, the following information is required:

  • Full name and surname of the baby
  • Date and place of still-birth and mother's usual address
  • Full names and occupations of the mother and father

A GRO 34 - permitting the burial or cremation to take place will be issued and a Certified copy may be purchased by the parents at the time of registration.
