EQUALITY

As part of the Lisburn City Council Corporate Strategy 2000-2005, the Council has as one of its core aims 'Fairness and Equality'. The Council's commitment to this value was further strengthened by the adoption of its Equality Scheme in July 2001.

The Equality Scheme, approved by the Equality Commission, is in place to facilitate mainstreaming equality of opportunity into the workings of the Council. It outlines the Council's commitment to fulfilling the statutory obligations under Section 75 and Schedule 9 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998.

The Council has set in place a four-year programme of impact assessments. Year 1 areas included promotion of equality and social inclusion, accessibility, community services and grant-aid policies. (New policies will be subject to equality screening).
