Lisburn City Council Welcomes Slovak Minister
29 October 2009

Lisburn City Council welcomed Mr Dušan Novotný of the Slovak Embassy to the City, during his recent Northern Ireland visit to promote business opportunities in Slovakia.

Representatives from SARIO, the Slovakian Investment Promotion Agency, accompanied Mr Novotný the Commercial Counsellor for the Slovak Embassy in London, on his visit.

Mr Novotný visited Lisburn as part of the Council’s Central and Eastern European Trade Development Programme to speak at the programme’s first workshop held at Lagan Valley Island.  The programme, facilitated by Lestas Consulting, is currently supporting twelve local companies to explore export opportunities in Central and Eastern European countries, including Slovakia.

Mr Novotný spoke to the programme participants about Slovakia, and the benefits of doing business in the country, which has performed well economically in recent years when compared to some of its neighbouring countries.  For example, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Slovakia has increased by a staggering 600% since 2000, with key business sectors such as engineering, electronics, information technology and the automotive industry performing well.

Chair of the Economic Development Committee, Councillor Jenny Palmer commenting on the visit said: “Lisburn City Council was delighted to host a visit by Mr Novotný to our City.  In recent years the Council has assisted twenty-five local businesses to do business in Central and Eastern European markets such as Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia, and I look forward to new trade and civic linkages being established in Slovakia.”
