THE LAGAN VALLEY LEISUREPLEX

 Child Admisions Policy To Pools

Lisburn City Council strives to provide the safest possible swimming environment for all its customers using the Lagan Valley LeisurePlex and recognises the particular importance of swimming as an activity for young children.

For a number of years the Council has followed Guidelines issued by the Institute of Sport & Recreation Mnagement (iSRM), concerning supervision arrangements for children using swimming pools. A review of these Guidelines means that Lisburn City Council will bring its Admissions Policy, in respect of children attending unprogrammed swimming, with effect from 1st April 2004.

What are the Guidelines?

Put simply they state:

1.  All children under the age of 4 must be accompanied by a responsible person (16 years and over) on a one-to-one basis except in controlled sessions.

2. One responsible person must supervise no more than a maximum of two children between 4 and 7 at any one time.

The above guidelines will apply for all public swimming sessions other than those identified as controlled.

So, what is a Controlled Session?

  • Controlled Sessions are normally those not open to the public e.g. swimming lessons.  A Controlled Session offers families the opportunity to bring two under-4 year olds to the facility at one time.  This means that, for example, an adult can bring a 3-year old and six month old baby to the pool by themselves.
  • Outside its formal lesson programme the Council provides several other Controlled Sessions, available for parents/guardians with young children.

When are the Controlled Sessions held?

  Swimming Lessons programme

The Adult &Toddler and Leisure Pool sessions indicated above provides the opportunity for a parent/guardian to participate in water activities with two children under the age of 4.
