Community Arts at Island Arts Centre is all about generating long-term active involvement in the arts, across all disciplines through specific community outreach programmes targeting previously excluded youth, women's groups, rural communities and people with disabilities. The aim of this work is to increase community participation in the arts and attendance at arts events both at Island Arts Centre and at events throughout the City.
The Community Arts Officer also assists and advises local arts societies, community groups, performance companies, artists, schools, sponsoring agencies, business and cultural groups in the provision of arts and cultural activities in the City and, where possible, assists in facilitating these activities. The post is also responsible for the servicing of Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee and assisting with the development, promotion and implementation of schemes, courses, projects and special events in conjunction with this committee.
Another major role of Community Arts is to promote an annual showcase of community arts activity through the Mayor's Carnival Parade, which is one of the largest community events in the province.
