INTRODUCTION

In 2002 Lisburn was awarded City Status as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

Lisburn has a long and illustrious history spanning nearly 400 years, which has witnessed the growth of its world famous linen industry, triumphed over not one but two fires, and emerged as one of the most economic and strategically important areas in Northern Ireland.  For further information on the historical significance of the City please click here.

The new city boundaries encompass not just to Lisburn City Centre but also to many towns and villages including Moira, Hillsborough, Dromara, Glenavy and Dunmurry.

Hillsborough has played host to many Royal Visits, as it was once Government House.  Today it serves as a residence for the Secretary of state for Northern Ireland and as a magnificent setting fro visiting dignitaries.

The towns and villages across the City continue to attract visitors and shoppers from across Northern Ireland, both for its floral displays, retail excellence and sporting facilities.

Recent exciting new developments include the opening of the New Library in January 06, extension of Bow Street Mall, the new North Feeder Road and the exciting proposals for a new 220,000 sq ft John Lewis and retail development at Sprucefield.

With first class schools, excellent infrastructure, and a booming retail industry it is not hard to see why Lisburn has become one of the most desirable places to live in Northern Ireland.

In relation to Lisburn City Centre the Council is ably assisted by and is a major funding contributor to Lisburn City Centre Management (LCCM).  To learn more about LCCM please click here.
